Double Valentine for Double the Love

If you are not already aware, it is going to be a double valentine celebration on February 14 this year. You see….the last day of Chinese New Year – a celebration that lasts for 15 days – also falls on February 14, St Valentine’s Day. Coincidentally, the last day of Chinese New Year is also a Chinese Valentine’s Day.
The Christian celebration of St Valentine’s Day is usually made with buying gifts for your lover; such as flowers, chocolates and jewellery. Well, allow me to share more about the customs and celebrations that fall on the last day of Chinese New Year.
The Last Day of Chinese New Year
The last day of Chinese New Year marks the celebration of the Lantern Festival. It is a major public holiday in China, which is celebrated with the beating of drums and lion dance performances on the streets.
Families will also gather together for “yuan xiao” dinner, whereby “tang yuan” (glutinous rice balls in soup) is served. Rolled into balls, “tang yuan” is symbolic of reunion and family togetherness. Served in bowls of flavored syrup, they are usually taken as dessert.
An after-dinner highlight is enjoying the enchanting moon outside. In ancient times, this provides a chance for young ladies to go out. Under normal circumstances, they were not allowed to step out of their homes unnecessarily. And so, the Lantern Festival has been said to be a romantic festival.
With the backdrop of the hanging lanterns and the moon in the night sky, the atmosphere becomes conducive for romance to happen. According to one traditional custom, young women would also throw citrus fruit into the sea whilst wishing for a good man to marry on this day.
Double Valentine Celebration
So, it is going to be a Double Valentine with Double the Love.
