Discover The Law of Attraction In Silence

Photo from Personal Album; Silence All Around

Yesterday, I came upon the quote below while reading The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel . I had picked up the book from where I left off before going to Thailand for my meditation retreat. SaiF had reminded me that “Silence” was mentioned in this book, in his comments to my post on Experiencing the Gap: The Space Between Thoughts. While searching for what Charles Haanel said about being in the Silence, the word “law” from the quote caught my eye as well.

“He who desires wisdom, power or permanent success of any kind will find it only within; it is an unfoldment. The unthinking may conclude that the silence is very simple and easily attained; but it should only be remembered that only in absolute silence may one come into contact with Divinity itself; may learn of the unchangeable law and open for himself the channels by which persistent practice and concentration lead to perfection.”

The Master Key System by Charles F Hannel

In the Master Key System, the law referred to is the Law Of Attraction. From the stated paragraph, it can be understood that it is in Silence, in meditation, that you can come to understand and be aware about its true power.

Yet, an interesting round of events emerged on the blogosphere recently. There was a revival in debate, sparked off by Leo’s article on his disbelief on the Law of Attraction, posted while I was away in Thailand. Read the subsequent thoughts by Tom, Tim and Akemi here.

Well, I’m not hoping to convince anyone today that there is a law of attraction but to provide some food for thought. My intent is to ask, assuming that you are not sure what to believe, why not investigate it for yourself about its truth and validity? Why not, as the quote suggests, go into Silence, though meditation and focused awareness, to check out whether this law truly exists? Why not see if it is possible to create some miracles into your life?

“Power comes through repose; it is in the Silence that we can be still, and when we are still, we can think, and thought is the secret of all attainment.”
The Master Key System

The Problem With The Word “Law”

If a light does not work, do you question about the laws governing electricity? If a bridge falls, do you conclude that there is no such thing as the law of gravity? If you cannot add up your sums, do you claim that the law of additions do not hold true?

Take for instance, a law about electricity. It is no less a law just because no one discovered it 100 or 1000 years ago. Once its benefits are discovered, we all agree that it is possible to create light in the middle of the night. As it is, we no longer question the laws on electricity. Nor do we even bother to understand its full workings. We just know that the light should come on nearly every time when we turn on a switch. If it fails to, we simply go to find out what is wrong and fix the problem.

At this stage, many face difficulty grappling with the concept on the Law of Attraction. We choose not to believe it and say that it can hardly be a law because it is not “proven” and does not work. We choose not to believe it, even before taking the time to investigate it.

A Secret No Less

In the book The Master Key System, the term “Law of Attraction” was used throughout. On its back cover, it was mentioned that this was “one of the greatest books ever written on the attainment of self awareness and success. It is a masterpiece, which originally sold over 200,000 copies until it was banned by the Church in 1933 and hidden away for decades.”

With its unfortunate history, it was no wonder that few have heard about the book or its author, Charles F. Haanel (May 22,1866-November 27,1949). A google search let me to the finding here that he was a noted American New Thought author and an influential businessman and has been regarded by many as the “Father of Personal Development”.

Here is the essence of what he said: The true source of power and all abundance, depends on the recognition of the law. It is only those who recognise the law and learn to be in harmony with it, who can revel in its secrets.

What Is Science

According to Wikipedia, this is the definition of Science…

Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning “knowledge”) is the effort to discover, understand, or to understand better, how the physical world works, with observable physical evidence as the basis of that understanding. It is done through observation of existing phenomena, and/or through experimentation that tries to simulate phenomena under controlled conditions. Knowledge in science is gained through research.

Many understand that there is an effect to every cause. Science is also based on being able to find the common factor in a number of separate instances for inductive reasoning.

Well, why not do the same for the Law of Attraction? Why not go into the very heart of its teachings often enough to gather some common findings and test out its principles?

In the Master Key System, you are encouraged to put some exercises into practice. “The student who gains an understanding of the mental laws which are unfolded will come into the possession of an ability to secure results hitherto undreamed of, and which has rewards hardly to be expressed in words.” Interestingly, rumor also has it that Bill Gates studied this book, while he was a student!

Hence, I therefore urge you to investigate for yourself the science behind your thoughts. Perhaps only when you have proven it often enough, you will also come to label the phenomena that you have observed with the popular term as it is known: law of attraction.

Do not also let being turned off by the multi-level style of promotion that went behind The Secret movie, get in the way of your investigations. As we all agree, there is much good that came out of that movie. If anything, I have been thankful that it gave me a kick on my butt to seek for more understanding and launching this blog in the process.

Common Sense and No Secret?

Then again, you may also be tempted to say that the Law of Attraction can hardly be anything spectacular because it is mere common sense. You ask: Isn’t it a given that positive thoughts attract positive outcomes?

Well, what makes sense to you may not make sense to others. I would also propose that there are enough people doubting out there about the law of attraction to make it uncommon common sense.

“Common sense is not so common.”

Voltaire quotes (French Philosopher and Writer. One of the greatest of all French authors, 1694-1778)

Make It A Study

I am a lifelong learner. I find myself always seeking to find out more. I simply can’t stop attending workshop after workshop, program after program, to satisfy my hunger for knowledge. I am now on the path to investigate more about the inner workings of my mind.

Perhaps what has drawn me very much so to Buddhist teachings is because Buddha never encouraged us to accept things as they are. Instead, he suggested that we investigate for ourselves what we really should be believing in.

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
— Buddha

So how about doing the same? Investigate the Mind. Practise focused concentration. Create pure intent. Here is a Science that you can prove or disprove on your own. You don’t need to be a mathematical genius or own a phD in physics to begin with.

Should you decide to follow my suggestion today, my request is that you do so with an open heart and mind. If you are filled with much doubt and skepticism, even before starting, you are already defeating the whole aim of seeking for real answers.

Most people don’t believe in fairies and devas and think such things are silly. This is the negative kind of mind, the one that’s suspicious and doubtful, that does not believe in anything. “I don’t believe in fairies and devas. I don’t believe in that kind of thing. Ridiculous! Show me a fairy!” So the very suspicious and skeptical mind never sees such things.

— Ajhan Sumedo on Investigating the Mind

Admittedly this process may take a while. After all, it will not be easy to practise having pure and focused thoughts and not be riddled with worry, fear, anger or any negative emotion, for the law of attraction to work. But really, when you think about it, what is there to lose? Investigating your mind is a study that brings you good benefits, even if you eventually did not manage to manifest all your dreams.

Just like when the light bulb fails and you fix the problem without questioning the laws of electricity, do the same for this mental study. At least for a period, give it your best shot! If something is not working, ask yourself if you have not applied focused attention or the act of creative thought properly.

In conclusion, to know the secret of the secret of the secret of the secret of the secret..and so on…..seek to understand the nature of thought. As you practise focused concentration, I dare propose that insight should arise. Hopefully, by the very process, you gain access to the power of pure potentiality – that which you think becomes a reality.

“The intention governs the attention. Power comes from repose. It is by concentration that deep thoughts, wise speech and all forces of high potentiality are accomplished.

It is in the Silence that you get into touch with the Omnipotent power of the subconscious mind from which all power is evolved.”

Thank you for the mention.
We all came to this world to learn and experience, using the power of our mind. Unfortunately, some people, sometimes, learn through negative experiences (tell me about it. . .) The key to learn through positive experiences, as you pointed out, is to open up to possibilities — like the possibility of miracles ^_^

It’s good to see you challenging people to think for themselves. I agree, if it bothers them so much then perhaps they need to question further. They could ask. What about the Law of Attraction makes me so defensive? If it were true how might that change my life? How does the existence of this law threaten my beliefs? I’d love to see those set of answers. 🙂

>Unfortunately, some people, sometimes, learn through negative experiences.

Sometimes our mistakes can be our greatest teachers.
The main point is orientation. If you are trying to learn from your experiences, you are by definition, changing uncomfortable experiences into less uncomfortable. Perhaps even life changing 🙂

Evelyn

I like your strong insight that you have gained on positive thinking. You changed my thought set already. At first I was going to complain about what I experienced but the moment you redirected me to read what you have to say then I started focussing on my pregnancy idea. I can’t bring forth this pregnancy if I am bomhared with negativity. I will focus and concentrate and look at the first baby I willl giving birth to instead of looking or listening to these negative thoughts or rumors that try to stop my progress.

Thank you for redirecting me.
Sincerely

Miss. Bridget C. Biggins
P.S. I will write you and tell you what my baby idea looks like and turned out to be and hopefully I’ll use your same method and give birth to my next baby idea.
Sincerely
Miss. Bridget C. Biggins

Hi Evelyn,

You give us a lot to think about in this post. I do agree common sense is not so common, and like you, I love to continue to learn.

With regard to the law of attraction, I do believe there’s truth behind it and that our thoughts are much more powerful than we could ever imagine.

Heya Evelyn!

Thanks for sharing a brief history behind that book “Laws of Attraction”. 🙂

Andrea Hess|Empowered Soul - June 27, 2008

Hi Evelyn,

Awesome post! I love the challenge you pose of investigating Truth for ourselves. Unfortunately, it’s so much easier for many to just say “Oh, the Law of Attraction doesn’t exist” instead of taking responsibility for creating our human experience.

In the end, we all need to discover our own personal Truth – not something we are generally encouraged to do! Really, this was a very thought-provoking post.

Blessings,
Andrea

Evelyn - June 27, 2008

Barbara, Andrea and Daniel, thank you for your comments. My aim is not to provide any answers in this article nor to contribute to any ongoing debate; but to invite readers to investigate for themselves what the truth really is. In the end, those who dare to take the challenge will know for sure and not just believe half heartedly in the power of their own thoughts and in creating and manifesting “miracles”.

May you experience abundance always,
Evelyn

Great post!

On the subject of making it a lifetime of study, I’ll just add this: if we do not grow, we wither. That is why we must expand wisdom at all times. I failed to do that in my 20’s and now regret it. Fortunately, I learned from my mistake and now grow a bit wiser with each passing day, although I have a long way to go.

For me, the only man who has been a consistent pointer to the truth of silence is J. Krishnamurti. Only in full attention, choiceless awareness, does the conditioning of the mind wither away, revealing what is there, and what there is now. Dead for over 20 years, his expressions may be found all over the Internet, including TouTube. Do not expect to “like” what he is saying.

Very well said. You know, I tend to be cynical… but you inspire me to try stuff that I would never try otherwise. Thank you.
