Awakening Into Awareness

When I am able to strip away all the false notions of self, I gain access to an underlying space of awareness. It is the silent witness, the observer to all there-is, that I find myself tuning into. Indeed, nature invited me to learn from observing the terrapin (see picture below) at the start of my blogging break last month.

“Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain.” — Henry David Thoreau

Awareness Looking At Itself

It was day three of my coming to the park. There was silence in the background. I was alone in a quiet part of the Botanic Gardens, far away from the crowd. As I looked out into the calm waters of the lake before me, I became aware of a terrapin standing in an island of leaves.

The terrapin was still. It appeared transfixed, looking up.

Perhaps the terrapin is observing something, I thought.

But at what, I wondered. At the sky? At the leaves? What?

I continued to wait, my eyes on the terrapin.

It did not move.

For a long time.

Then, a thought flashed in my mind: the observer (the terrapin) has become the observed (through me).

From that single thought, the next few questions arose naturally: If I am observing the terrapin observing something else, can there be another entity that is observing me observing the terrapin observing something else? Who, then, is observing me? Is it an entity to begin with?

Can that which is observing me be the same as that which is observing the terrapin? Is this awareness the silent witness to all that is going on?

Awareness in Awareness

The presence that lies in each flower, animal or person is the same awareness. We are all part of a unified consciousness that created all there-is. The same intelligent field witnesses all that is going on. It orchestrates the interweaving of all events, people and things. We are individuals integrated to the fabric of the cosmic whole.

Awareness is looking at itself in each moment of awareness. When I look at my daughter, I see the miracle of her presence right before my eyes. At the same time, I see myself through the reflection in her eyes. She is in me, in my awareness. I am in her, in her awareness. Awareness is aware that it is aware.

What is great is that there is no need to seek or go looking for awareness or enlightenment. We are who we seek. We are awareness itself. The mind is the canvas from which thoughts arise. With conscious awareness, thoughts take physical shape in our external reality.

“The ‘I am’ contains all that is needed for making the world, even though by itself it consists of nothing but a silent witness.”
— Deepak Chopra

Nature Tapestry Notes

Notes for the Day: We are the observer and the observed. We are the awareness that we seek. However, we cannot actually seek because awareness can only be experienced in the now. What we observe in our reality is an expression of the same awareness that is weaved into our very fabric of existence. We are the miracle in the miracle of life itself.

Sidenote: If the above seemingly circular discussion on awareness is putting you in mental agony, may I suggest that you don’t even try to understand a word of it. Awareness can only be known from its own experiencing. There are no labels or words that can fully describe what it is or means. Neither will I claim to live in continuous full awakeness at this point.

“My sense of identity broke down and was replaced by something that is very hard to put into words. Awareness, Consciousness.”
— Echkart Tolle

Nature Tapestry Notes in November is a series of articles put together from my walks and sittings at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Nature helps us interweave in awareness to the innate quality of our divine self nature, that of abundance.

Perfect quote by Deepak. I remember in an interview he said, “we are the thinker of our thoughts” and “thoughts are things.”

Awareness is a good example of scope and focus … and we get to be the director in our lives and point our cameras at whatever we want … at whatever zoom level we want.

Evelyn Reply:

Hello J.D., I enjoyed what you said about being a director. We are essentially talking about conscious awareness when we direct our thoughts and point our cameras at what we want.

Abundance always,
Evelyn

Awareness is similar to giving full attention, energy and focus on things you wanted to achieve. To give attention is to listen to yourself, your heart and to your soul.

Everytime I have my “walking exercise” in the morning, I enjoy looking at the blue sky, the green leaves, the birds flying and the sounds of the nature. I say my prayers, petitions, and dreams to the birds and to the nature to take my hopes and aspirations to the Supreme Being- the giver of all things dear to me. Per my experience, the nature has its own way of helping us to made our dreams come true; its draws right people, circumstances and events to help you achieve your dreams if you have strong conviction in yourself and things around you- nature. Humans are part and parcel of this universe.

There’s a haiku I like that goes something like this:
“Stalking awareness
Is like looking for water
When you’re swimming in it.”

What a neat moment you had – that you’re both the observer and the observed. That awareness is working through you at all moments, and through each of us, and all things… Awareness just is. We, as “me’s” are what barricade it. Awareness simply is. Our only job is to awaken to it, or let it take over occupancy for whatever moments we can.

I loved reading this today, as it ties in with an experience I had yesterday during a meditation, which I will be writing about for tomorrow’s post. Thanks so much!

Great post! I loved the observations you shared. Awareness is a really cool thing and I’m so glad you wrote about it.

Hi Evelyn,

What a beautiful post! I also loved the pictures that you included. It just adds to the experience and makes us feel as if we were right there with you as you observed the terrapin.

I often joke with my husband, I wonder if God ever gets bored watching us and all the things that we do. As if human existence were like a television show.

We definitely are the observer and the observed. It is kind of cool how it works and how are our core, we are already perfect and whole. But the illusions get in the way.

Thank you so much for sharing your journeys at the botanical gardens. Sounds like a beautiful place.

Your sidenote made me laugh, this post is a little deep for me as I take a mid-afternoon break at work. I may come by later, when I have more time to ponder. On a note not as deep, you mention of the turtles made me think. They often spend time just sitting, soaking up the suns rays. Sitting for hours and hours on end. I could hardly imagine sitting for so long. Maybe one day, I’ll try to out-sit a turtle.

Hi Evelyn,

A beautiful post…and I love the picture.

It is just awareness, this unoccupied gentle innocent awaring presence. It’s always there; looking for it seemingly obscures it; the wall of thoughts and fear we build seemingly obscures it. When seen, it as simple as can be.

Thanks, this is a great pointer.

Evelyn this is such a wonderful post. I actually recently watched a movie with an enlightened master Ram Tzu who said: “It is Ego that wants to get rid of the Ego”. This phrase made me think alot. Goes so well with what you said about awareness – “there is no need to seek or go looking for awareness or enlightenment.” It can only be experienced, it is already in us.

P.S. I just read your bio too and was amazed with so many similarities! Thanks for a wonderful blog and inspiring us!

Emma,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It is wonderful that nature draws to you what you need in the fulfillment of your dreams. I wish you continued joy, peace and bliss in the surroundings of nature.

Megan,

I laughed at the haiku that you shared. How true!

Hope to read your insights from the meditation session that you had soon!

With love,

Positively Present,

I never thought of awareness as a “cool thing” but your comment made me smile at the thought 🙂

Nadia,

I am pretty sure that God, pure awareness, source or whatever one wishes to call it will be pretty amused by the dramas that I put myself through. I trap myself in the same type of events. I never seem to move beyond until I decide to try to do things differently, with some level of awareness.

Abundance always,
Evelyn

@Jon, I like the picture of the terrapin too. Every time I look at it, it reminds me of the day when I have understood the message that came along with it.

@Eric, your comment about out sitting the turtle made me laugh too. I was definitely sitting there for a long time, hoping that the terrapin will move first. Well, the terrapin did a better job in sitting still!

Evelyn - November 10, 2009

Kaushik,

You said “the wall of thoughts and fear we build seemingly obscures it”. How true! Only when we are truly present, can we begin to experience the essential nature of awareness. At the same time, it is always there. The ever eternal, expanding, light-filled awareness.

Namaste.
Evelyn

Hello Lana,

Welcome to my site. I enjoyed what you shared by Ram Tzu “It is Ego that wants to get rid of the Ego”. The Ego is our learning tool. We learn how to mindful of it, instead of wanting to get rid of something that we can’t totally remove. Thanks for the pointer!

Abundance always,
Evelyn

He he he writing about this kind of thing is a trip huh?

Julie - November 11, 2009

Evelyn, what a wonderful job you did of trying to explain the inexplicable, this awareness that can only truly be experienced as “felt” knowledge. I love your statement, “We are the miracle in the miracle of life itself.” Beautiful! It’s now featured in the quote block under my blog’s header. I didn’t think you’d mind. 🙂

Marelisa - November 11, 2009

Hi Evelyn: That is an interesting thought. If you catch yourself having thoughts that are not conducive to feelings of happiness, and you tell yourself to stop unproductive thinking, who is telling you to stop having those thoughts? How can we both think about something and observe ourselves thinking it? Very interesting.

Lisa (mommymystic) - November 11, 2009

Evelyn, I don’t know if I can add anything! As Kaushik noted, you have created a beautiful ‘pointer’ for us all with this post. And as you said, it can’t really be understood intellectually, can it? So it requires a poetic writer to convey it, and I am not really that:-) But I will say, that for me also, nature is a powerful catalyst for knowing myself as part of the ocean of consciousness…and that collapse between observer and observed is a true moment of seeing, beyond any spiritual practice or technique…

Ellie Walsh - November 11, 2009

And so on and so on – Awareness in Awareness in Awareness in Awareness – infinite Awareness!

Great Post!
