How to Stop Money Worship and Create More Wealth
Money worship results from being in a state of craving. It happens when you are in hot pursuit of ventures for the sole purpose of making cash alone (without any desire to add value). One thing is clear when you are desperately wanting: you are in lack.
“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” – Will Smith
“Money is usually attracted, not pursued.” – Jim Rohn
Money worship also happens from hankering after material items. You don’t feel like you will ever have enough. This puts you in a constant pursuit of money from having the belief that that money can solve all your issues. You dream about the time when you are able to buy a luxury good and finally feeling satisfied. However, by doing so, you are giving away your power to feeling happy in the here and now.
The Story of Sally vs The Story of Jolene
Take my massage therapist, Sally, for instance.
Over a massage session, she started confessing about how badly she wanted a designer handbag. To begin with, she had no particular bag that she desired. What she was mulling over was trying to decide which brand β Gucci, Prada or Chanel – to select first.
As Sally leaned towards me, she went into a whisper that her income was not enough for her to afford one. However, she had been badgering her boyfriend to get her one. To her dismay, he hadn’t. And so, she could not help but wonder if he was the “one”.
A couple of days later, I met up with my investment adviser, Jolene.
While having coffee with her, I observed how confident Jolene looked. Like Sally, Jolene is not well educated. Yet, sitting across me was a woman who was immaculately dressed, pretty and articulate….and not surprisingly, carrying a branded handbag.
Observing the two ladies made me reflect on the difference in their experiences.
Sally is an employee who trades her time for money. Her income largely comes from working regular hours as a massage therapist. She has got money woes. Needless to say, Sally almost always comes across as pushy for the products that her salon makes her sell to clients.
On the other hand….
Jolene is self-employed. She is an entrepreneur who set up her own firm with employees under her. She makes commissions from sales of investment products. She earns only when she makes a sale.
Although running a business can get stressful at times, Jolene loves what she is doing. Her passion is to help her clients grow their funds. She places emphasis on building relationships with her clients. She also stands by her principle on not selling product deals that look shoddy or products that she has little knowledge on.
I recall the time when I first met Jolene a few years ago. Although we were meeting for a discussion on investment products, she did not launch into a sales pitch right away. Instead, she was happy to focus on getting to know me better. She had presence. She was clearly magnetic. It is the reason why I like buying products from her to this day π
How To Create Wealth and Be More Happy
Of course, it is nice to buy ourselves something that we like every now and then but it is important to recognize that craving and worshiping money or luxury items will not make us truly happy. The satisfaction that external goods bring will never be quite as fulfilling as the loving relationships we cultivate or the spiritual wealth that we develop, for instance.
Sally needs to learn that money worship only brings about money woes. Happiness becomes elusive when we make it dependent on whether we have reached there or not. We are less likely to enjoy the journey. Mostly, we are stuck in complaints or misery. It is far better to spend the time to invest in our own growth and our dreams for abundance. Only buy what we can afford!
In the case of Jolene, it is through the client relationships that she has built that money flows to her. Her wealth creation plan comes simply from her passion and aligning with her values. Three years ago, when she was compelled to leave her firm due to differences in values with her sales manager, she decided that enough was enough.
Jolene set up a firm so that she could continue to do what she loves but on her own terms. Not only that, she went on to hiring a team so that she could use the power of leverage for wealth creation. Additionally, she has been allocating a part of her income to charitable organizations. She is having the lifestyle of her dreams. I definitely enjoy her positive “can-do” spirit!

“What we really want to do is what we are really meant to do. When we do what we are meant to do, money comes to us, doors open for us, we feel useful, and the work we do feels like play to us.” – Julia Cameron
