Eliminate the Enemy of Creativity

Creativity has an enemy.

This enemy has the initials S.D.

(Spot the enemy in the picture.)

On first look, you may guess S.D. to be Sexual Disease but it is not.

If marketing guru, Seth Godin, is to write this post, he will tell you that S.D. comes from the lizard brain. It is the reptilian part of you that wishes to enforce safety by keeping you in the comfort zone.

I have noticed that S.D. likes to hang around often when I work on many of my creative projects.

It drops in in the midst of my self-talk.

There will be periods when S.D. would dominate the inner conversation.

And then, my entire self goes into a freeze.

I become paralyzed.

Unable to write, doodle or even utter another word.

S.D. is the single most important factor why I find it hard to hit the button “publish” sometimes.

With S.D. on the strike, I would put aside my entire project.

Saving it for another day, buried under piles of paper and also, giving myself plenty of excuses on why it is better that I spend my time watching tear-jerking Korean drama serials.

Do not underestimate S.D. therefore.

To conquer it, you will need to identify and confront your enemy.

Can you guess what S.D. is?

Haha. Took me a while, but is S.D. = Self-doubt?

Self-Doubt sounds right, but I’ll tell you something. If you let that S.D. have too much power, it turns into another S.D.: self-deprecation.

How true…I agree with your observation: self-doubt leading to self-deprecation.

I was listening to Tony Robbins again recently and he reminded me of a few key concepts related to self-confidence. The first key concept is that self-confidence is a feeling. At any point, you can feel self-confident, if you can change your state so that you feel unstoppable.

Ah, how to feel unstoppable? This is where the magic happens and it happens fast. The key is to change your physiology first. Too many people try to think their way into confidence. No. Your body knows what confidence feels like. So do it
– Stand how you would stand if you were unstoppable
– Breathe how you would breathe if you were unstoppable
– Say to yourself, Yes, I can … Yes, I can, and mean it

… and remember the feeling of any time in your life where you were firing on all cylinders and you felt totally unstoppable.

I think this approach is especially important for anybody who might get stuck in trying to think there way to confidence or talk there way to confidence … it’s a feeling thing, so “feelings first” 😉

Hello J.D.

Yes, there are some who believe in changing physiology first. However, my observation is that while it can help for some people, not everyone can effectively gravitate towards self-confidence in that manner.

At the root of it all, is the issue of low self-esteem, love and acceptance. Once these can be addressed, then dealing with an issue of confidence becomes much easier. One of the ways, as you have mentioned, is by changing the state. Practice definitely helps for building confidence in social settings.

Learning how to manage our emotions is definitely very useful. It is from gaining an inner awareness about our emotions that allow us to trace and address root causes. The path towards aligning with inner power becomes more real and permanent.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts,
Evelyn

Self Doubt is such a beast. It leads to Self Deprecation and eventually Self Destruction. What a waste. That inner critic presiding over the negative committee in our head. Yes, let’s eliminate it!

Love and hugs, Vidya

Hi Vidya,

It is insightful to know how Self-Doubt can evolve to Self-Deprecation and then finally to Self-Destruction! Yes, eliminate SD in its bud.

I really enjoyed the post Evelyn! I couldn’t figure SD out until I read the comments. I have those moments of SD, too. I’ll confront the enemy next time I see it!

Hello Betsy,

We all do have moments of doubt. We need to continue to encourage and inspire each other 🙂

Hi Evelyn — good to see you again. I hope you’re well. I know I struggled with some “SD” for some time before I decided to put my current project “out there,” but I feel like I finally prevailed. I’ve assembled a team to put together the first episode of my animated musical, and we expect it to go live within a few months. Looking forward to reading what I’ve missed in your posts during my blogging hiatus. Best, Chris

My initial thought was SD stood for Sunny Day–ha! The sun looks so inviting, I would just want to lie in the hammock and read a good book!

LOL!!

I can just imagine you doing that! Wish I can have a chance to lie in a hammock and just daydream my afternoons away!

Have a lovely week,
Evelyn
