My Out-of-Body Experiences

Slowly I awoke to the strangest sensation. It was as if my body was disconnected from the rest of me. My vision was not quite clear but I was able to see my right hand flung over a pillow. At the same time, I found myself not having physical control of any bodily movement. I experienced an odd separation between body and spirit. My mind was talking in the background, attempting to assess the situation. If anything, I could sense my spirit hovering near my body; close, but not close enough to know that I was One and whole.
Aha!! Immediately, I (the mind) recognized what was happening. I was having the same experience yet again! The first of a very similar event, an out-of-body experience (OBE), occurred only about 2 months back. My second OBE just took place on early Sunday morning (Nov 2, 2008) over the weekend.
“In order to experience everyday spirituality, we need to remember that we are spiritual beings spending some time in a human body.”
— Barbara De Angelis quotes (American researcher on relationships and personal growth)
I would not want to miss taking down notes. Since you (the reader to my site) have clearly indicated that you wish to read more about my own personal experiences, I am publishing about my OBEs here. (On reflection, as I am writing this post, I believe that I may already have had many OBEs previously. I have often woken up from very strange sleep and dreams but have largely been unaware to take notice. For the benefit of easy recording from this day forward, I am numbering the OBE on Nov 2, 2008 as #2.)
Out-of-Body Experience #1
When OBE#1 happened, I was struck by fear. It was ridiculous that I could not even recognize my own body. It was also an early Sunday morning. I “sensed” this body next to me. It was strange, my mind said. Did someone come over to sleep with me last night? One of my kids, maybe? I remembered falling asleep alone, after meditating the night before. The rest of the family had chosen to be hurdled in the big warm bed in the next room.
However, as I peered over the body for a closer look, I saw a pair of hands. My mind began to seize in panic. Oh shit!!! They were mine. But it felt as if they were severed from the rest of my body.
Next, I tried to move one of my hands. It was heavy. I was like trying to move a ton of bricks. The rest of my body appeared to be in trance, still and also, heavy. My mind tried to search itself for a sense of where the rest of me (the mind-spirit including) was.
The next thought arose swiftly: How do I connect my hands back to my body? Cold fear swept in. For a couple of seconds, I (the spirit or the mind) just froze.
My mind spoke again: Hey hey! Let’s calm down. Let’s not panic. Let’s try to gain some control. Move the hands again!
Since my hands felt heavy, I had to “will” them to touch my face. The sensation was an odd mix. On one hand, the rest of me could feel that my face was being touched, but on the other, the sensation felt unreal. As I am writing this, I realize that I do not have the words to completely describe what I experienced back then. Should I have to articulate them in some words, then I believe my spirit was at this stage attempting to integrate back to my body, and gaining control over my hands.
Out-of-Body Experience #2
Now back to OBE#2. As soon as my mind realized what was going on, I was not fearful nor was I in panic. I (the mind-spirit) was completely separated from my body. In a stern tone and with a small laughter at the end, my mind told my hovering spirit: “Get back right in!”
As I tried to move my right hand, I could feel as if I was awakening to having back my senses. At first, an odd sensation, it soon melted away to an inner sense of knowing that I (the spirit) had come home!
What is an Out-of-Body Experience?
In case you are wondering, I also wish to state categorically that I was not having a lucid dream on Nov 2, 2008. The sensation of a OBE is completely different.
According to Wikipedia, this is the defination of a OBE…
“An out-of-body experience (OBE or sometimes OOBE), is an experience that typically involves a sensation of floating outside of one’s body and, in some cases, perceiving one’s physical body from a place outside one’s body (autoscopy). About one in ten people has an out-of-body experience at some time in their lives. Scientists know little about the phenomenon. OBEs are often part of the near-death experience, and reportedly may also lead to astral projection. It is claimed that those experiencing an OBE sometimes observe details which were unknown to them beforehand.”
What else is said on Wikipedia is this….
“However it’s worth noting that even those who describe the experience as something fantastic that occurs during sleep, and who describe the end of the experience by saying ‘and then I woke up’, are very specific in describing the experience as one which was clearly not a dream; many described their sense of feeling more awake than they felt when they were normally awake. One compared the experience to that of lucid dreaming, but said that it was ‘more real’.”
While surfing the web for more information, I came across this quote. It tickled me:
“If I ever had an out-of-body experience — I’d try to come back to a different one.”
Tom Wilson quotes (American actor, writer and comedian)
Now, if my soul or spirit can exercise a choose, which physical form would I want to come back in? Hmmmm…the possibilities can be interesting!

P.S. I could not find a picture to go along with this post on my OBEs. In the end, I created an image using my favorite Photoshop software out of a background picture by pinkspleen that I found on flick! Hope you like it!
