7 Ways to Embrace Difficult Changes From Within

“When we are no longer able to change a situation – we are challenged to change ourselves.” – Viktor E. Frankl

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” – Leo Tolstoy

time for change

Are you happy with the result that you are already getting?

If you are not and would like a different outcome, it is time to do things differently.

As Albert Einstein says, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Last week, I brought my daughter to a free preview workshop on effective examination strategies. To our surprise, the trainers turned out to be highly motivational. During the workshop, the trainers asked the children in the audience two poignant questions in the following order:

Are you willing to change your results?

Are you willing to change to change your results?

The trainers managed to get a “yes” from every child in the audience.

Unexpectedly, my daughter also nodded enthusiastically – despite the fact that she had been resistant to making changes to her learning attitude for some time.

In our follow-up discussion after the preview workshop, she admitted that what was delivered during the workshop were no more different than what my husband and I have been trying to share with her. What was great was that during the presentation, the trainers had used some of the same quotes and examples to illustrate the same points. She was finally in agreement!

And so, I am going to take the opportunity to share what these are with you in this article.

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
– Steve Jobs

How to Embrace Difficult Changes More Easily

In order to have a different result, you need to first make changes. Mostly, change is an inside-out process. It has to begin with you!

You may at first baulk at the thought of having to make a change. It is understandable. After all, if you are already so used to a way of thinking and doing things, change can appear rather difficult.

Your resistance may even be stronger especially the change means taking a big leap from where you are. To change will mean having to leave a comfort zone and venture into something unknown. So how do you get over the hump of change when you have gulps of fear stuck in your throat?

1. Recognize Secondary Benefit. A secondary benefit exists where you are stuck from reaching your goal. You are aware that you need to make a change but you cannot seem to move forward. This is when you know that you could be holding on to a secondary benefit subconsciously, that prevents you from making a needed change.

Next, bring awareness to the fact that the secondary benefit – while useful at one stage – is not serving you currently in getting to your desired outcome. Finally, do some release work regarding the secondary benefit. (Need personal coaching with release work? Consider working with me.)

2. Start With a Single Step. Change feels daunting when you find that you are nowhere near your goal. But always remember the Chinese saying “a thousand mile journey begins with a single step”. Making the first step – no matter how small – can be a great confidence booster for massive change!

3. Change Your Perspective. If you keep to your old perspective, change can appear like a huge monster. Changing your perspective means looking at the same situation with a more enlightened angle. “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” – Wayne Dyer

4. Align With a New Desired State. You need to visualize yourself with the new goal or dream. When you keep your mind focused on the desired outcome, you become more willing to let go of the old. Your goal or dream keeps you moving forward. You become more willing to embrace change.

Take visualization one step further with visioning. Visioning is to actively work towards your goal or dream. For more details, check out my Life Vision Mastery Program.

5. Solicit support. Ask for help. While this tip is about getting external assistance, it has to begin with you asking and being open to receiving.

Having a supportive team – rather than feeling alone in your journey – can be very helpful. You receive energetic support whilst you work towards your goal. Make sure that you surround yourself with like-minded friends who can’t stop cheering you on.

6. Believe in Yourself. Most of us tend to underestimate ourselves. We are plagued with self-doubt. The thing is that we have got a lot more in us than we know.

A strong conviction in yourself can help you weather difficult transition periods. Set aside your self-doubt and simply believe! You will be delighted to discover how much a change in self-belief can help!

7. Make New Action. Get into new action by doing something different. The new action may not even be directly related to your goal. For instance, you may take on a new form of physical exercise or join a different interest group. What you are hoping to do is to rattle up your resonance to match the vibration of change. This one tip alone is priceless!

Ready to Make a Change?

“Change will never happen when people lack the ability and courage to see themselves for who they are.” – Bryant H. McGill

“Life belongs to the living, and he who lives must be prepared for changes.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

It is now my turn to ask you the same questions. If you are not already happy with your current situation –

– Are you willing to change your results?

– Are you willing to change to change your results?

If your answer is yes, outline your next steps for making needed changes right away!

I used to live a pessimistic life, with low self esteem, when I started reading certain things like this one and listening to certain people, my mindset changed and I start having good sense of humour. Now I believe in myself, I can adopt any changes by His grace. Here has also helped me especially getting things to lubricate my reasoning and help others under one prison of wrong thought or the other. I remain grateful

Evelyn,
This was very inspiring!
Last night I had a dream that scared me so much that I woke up with my heart pounding. It was a warning dream about needing to change something.

I like to be inspired to change rather than “scared” into it. I’m so glad I read your post today.
xoxo,
Angela

Evelyn-
You have offered excellent information and a lot of it. Everything you said makes sense and is a great reminder to give the ‘stuck’ pieces of myself a nudge.

I’m impressed with your daughter’s response and with the work that you and your husband and doing with her.

Hi Evelyn,

This was a brilliant and highly motivational post!

I loved tip number 7 as it got me thinking of times when I’ve just taken action and that action didn’t seem to have much to with any goal I was pursuing at the time. Any action (and particularly action that is new to us) develops us and our confidence unconsciously.

Thank you.

Change is an inside out process, Evelyn, but how come we usually consider making changes or feel inspired to change when our external circumstances put us in a really tough spot? Challenging circumstances encourage change in us and usually we wait until extreme situations to try to change:)

Aligning with a new goal or desire and visualizing the change has worked for me otherwise. I just had to start seeing the situation and the situation differently because I could take that first step. Once I had a vivid picture in my head, I could then start taking the small steps to make change in my life.

Hi Vishnu,

I know. It’s usually when we are down on our knees, when we feel prompted to make the most change.

It’s great that you use the power of imagery to think differently and move towards your goals! I hope to apply this tip more often myself.

Love and abundance always,
Evelyn

Support from others is really critical. It is often overlooked, even in the term self-help there is this subtle implication of doing it mySELF. Often it’s a fear to put it out there that you need assistance, but it can be amazing how supportive the reaction you get will be.

Hello CJ,

I totally agree about having support. I have been extremely fortunate to receive support when I needed assistance. More often than not, it is fear of rejection that has prevented me from asking at first. But once I asked, I get the support that I need.

Hi Evelyn,

nice topic.

If we want to have more positifs results, we need to work on us.

Others aren’t the mains authors for our state in life.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.(The Book of Ecclesiastes 3)

So, It’s time to change……
