7 Ways to Embrace Difficult Changes From Within
“When we are no longer able to change a situation – we are challenged to change ourselves.” – Viktor E. Frankl
“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” – Leo Tolstoy
Are you happy with the result that you are already getting?
If you are not and would like a different outcome, it is time to do things differently.
As Albert Einstein says, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Last week, I brought my daughter to a free preview workshop on effective examination strategies. To our surprise, the trainers turned out to be highly motivational. During the workshop, the trainers asked the children in the audience two poignant questions in the following order:
Are you willing to change your results?
Are you willing to change to change your results?
The trainers managed to get a “yes” from every child in the audience.
Unexpectedly, my daughter also nodded enthusiastically – despite the fact that she had been resistant to making changes to her learning attitude for some time.
In our follow-up discussion after the preview workshop, she admitted that what was delivered during the workshop were no more different than what my husband and I have been trying to share with her. What was great was that during the presentation, the trainers had used some of the same quotes and examples to illustrate the same points. She was finally in agreement!
And so, I am going to take the opportunity to share what these are with you in this article.
For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

How to Embrace Difficult Changes More Easily
In order to have a different result, you need to first make changes. Mostly, change is an inside-out process. It has to begin with you!
You may at first baulk at the thought of having to make a change. It is understandable. After all, if you are already so used to a way of thinking and doing things, change can appear rather difficult.
Your resistance may even be stronger especially the change means taking a big leap from where you are. To change will mean having to leave a comfort zone and venture into something unknown. So how do you get over the hump of change when you have gulps of fear stuck in your throat?
1. Recognize Secondary Benefit. A secondary benefit exists where you are stuck from reaching your goal. You are aware that you need to make a change but you cannot seem to move forward. This is when you know that you could be holding on to a secondary benefit subconsciously, that prevents you from making a needed change.
Next, bring awareness to the fact that the secondary benefit – while useful at one stage – is not serving you currently in getting to your desired outcome. Finally, do some release work regarding the secondary benefit. (Need personal coaching with release work? Consider working with me.)
2. Start With a Single Step. Change feels daunting when you find that you are nowhere near your goal. But always remember the Chinese saying “a thousand mile journey begins with a single step”. Making the first step – no matter how small – can be a great confidence booster for massive change!
3. Change Your Perspective. If you keep to your old perspective, change can appear like a huge monster. Changing your perspective means looking at the same situation with a more enlightened angle. “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” – Wayne Dyer
4. Align With a New Desired State. You need to visualize yourself with the new goal or dream. When you keep your mind focused on the desired outcome, you become more willing to let go of the old. Your goal or dream keeps you moving forward. You become more willing to embrace change.
Take visualization one step further with visioning. Visioning is to actively work towards your goal or dream. For more details, check out my Life Vision Mastery Program.
5. Solicit support. Ask for help. While this tip is about getting external assistance, it has to begin with you asking and being open to receiving.
Having a supportive team – rather than feeling alone in your journey – can be very helpful. You receive energetic support whilst you work towards your goal. Make sure that you surround yourself with like-minded friends who can’t stop cheering you on.
6. Believe in Yourself. Most of us tend to underestimate ourselves. We are plagued with self-doubt. The thing is that we have got a lot more in us than we know.
A strong conviction in yourself can help you weather difficult transition periods. Set aside your self-doubt and simply believe! You will be delighted to discover how much a change in self-belief can help!
7. Make New Action. Get into new action by doing something different. The new action may not even be directly related to your goal. For instance, you may take on a new form of physical exercise or join a different interest group. What you are hoping to do is to rattle up your resonance to match the vibration of change. This one tip alone is priceless!
